N-ATLAS and Nigeria's Open-Source AI Push: What It Means for Climate Services
Nigeria's multilingual open-source model understands Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo. Paired with geospatial AI, it can make climate warnings truly local.

In 2025 Nigeria unveiled N-ATLAS, an open-source, multilingual large language model built by the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) with Awarri Technologies. It processes Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo and Nigerian-accented English. In 2026 the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy ran a national innovation challenge to get startups building on it.
The last-mile problem in climate warnings Satellites and forecast models can now predict floods and heatwaves with impressive skill. Yet the final step, getting a farmer in Kebbi or a trader in Onitsha to understand and act, still fails often. Warnings are usually technical, in English and sent as text.
Where a national language model fits - Translation with context: turning "probability of exceeding the 50-year return level" into "the river may rise over the road by Thursday; move livestock to higher ground". - Voice delivery: generating natural audio advisories for IVR and WhatsApp voice notes, which suits low-literacy users. - Two-way feedback: letting citizens report flooding or crop disease in their own language, then structuring those reports as geotagged data.
How the stack works 1. Our hazard engine produces a geospatial forecast, such as a flood-extent polygon. 2. It is intersected with digital postcodes, settlements and population to see who is affected. 3. N-ATLAS turns the impact message into the right language and reading level. 4. The message goes out by SMS, WhatsApp, IVR or community radio scripts.
Guardrails we recommend - Keep a human in the loop for life-safety messages. - Use fixed, tested templates for critical instructions; let the model only localise them. - Log every message for audit and improvement.
Open-source national AI is a strategic asset. Combined with geospatial intelligence, it can close the gap between knowing about a hazard and acting on it.
